The least reliable car brands of 2024: MG leads, EVs struggle
UK outlet What Car?, working with insurer MotorEasy, has named the year’s least reliable car brands. MG tops the list: 28% of owners reported electrical faults, and repairs often stretched on for weeks, turning minor issues into prolonged downtime.
Nissan also came under scrutiny among Japanese marques. Owners of the Juke crossover and Ariya EV pointed to repairs that were both costly and time-consuming. Jaguar and Land Rover once again reinforced their reputation for being temperamental, with most trouble traced to electrical systems and transmissions.
The roster also includes Ford (Focus, Kuga), Volkswagen (ID.3, ID.4), Audi (Q7, E-tron), Mercedes-Benz (C-Class, GLE) and Volvo (V60, V90).
U.S. News added more detail, flagging specific low-reliability models: Tesla Model Y, Rivian R1T, Lincoln Nautilus, Audi Q4 e-tron, Polestar 2, Mazda CX-90, BMW X1 and Cadillac Lyriq. The Lyriq emerged as the biggest underperformer with just 53 points out of 100, as owners reported frequent electronic glitches and an awkward infotainment setup.
Taken together, these findings make a simple point: prestige and price don’t guarantee dependability. Electrical faults and issues around EVs show up as a common thread, and for the Russian market—where many of these cars arrive through parallel imports—such rankings are particularly useful when choosing a car.
