Volvo Trucks I-Roll: automatic engine shut-off saves fuel on FH and FH Aero
Volvo Trucks has developed an innovative automatic engine shut-off technology called I-Roll, designed specifically for heavy-duty trucks. The system is intended to significantly cut fuel consumption and reduce carbon dioxide emissions.
The principle is straightforward: the engine switches off automatically during prolonged descents. This is enabled by dedicated sensors and an engine management algorithm that tracks vehicle parameters and optimizes the powertrain’s operating mode to minimize fuel use.
According to the company, the new technology can deliver up to an additional 1% fuel saving compared with existing systems of this kind. The number may look modest, but at the scale of freight operations it can noticeably shift operating costs; in long-haul work, incremental gains often matter most.
I-Roll will debut on two of Volvo Trucks’ flagship heavy-duty models, the FH and FH Aero. Both are powered by a 13-liter diesel engine that provides high performance and reliability even in demanding conditions. Introducing the feature on these models feels like a natural step for the brand’s long-haul lineup.
Series production of vehicles equipped with I-Roll is scheduled for November 2025. The company expects the rollout to improve the environmental profile of commercial fleets and enhance transport efficiency, while at the same time lowering expenses for large fleet operators and independent carriers.
