American EV maker eyes European market with new budget-friendly lineup

Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe has confirmed plans for two new affordable EVs — the R4 and R5 — designed primarily for the European market. While no prototypes have been built, designs are reportedly complete, and an additional R6 model may follow. These vehicles will be smaller than the upcoming R3, targeting a growing demand for compact electric cars and wagons in Europe.

The announcement comes as Rivian faces ongoing financial challenges and production delays, notably at its Georgia plant, now unlikely to start before 2028. Analysts warn that expanding the lineup without securing profitability from existing models could be risky. Still, Rivian appears committed to pursuing mass-market appeal to compete with established European and Chinese automakers.
