Genesis G90 Wingback Magma: the surprise performance wagon concept

Genesis pulled off a genuine surprise at the Los Angeles Auto Show, unveiling the G90 Wingback Magma—an arresting wagon derived from the flagship G90 sedan and honed by the Magma performance division. The concept was shown for only a fleeting moment before being whisked backstage, which only amplified the buzz. Even in that brief cameo, the stance alone signaled intent.

The Wingback Magma follows a drive-plus-luxury credo: widened fenders, an assertive front end, substantial wheels, and a lowered silhouette make it read as a Korean counterpart to BMW M Touring—or even a hypothetical Audi RS8 Avant. Internal sources said the project carried the codename Dr Evil Magma.

The G90 has long been a direct challenge to Germany’s premium trio, and now Genesis is hinting at an even bolder expansion of its lineup. The brand already has wagon experience—the G70 Shooting Brake is sold in Europe—and the momentum from that model encourages further experimentation.

Genesis is keeping quiet on the hardware for now, but there’s a chance the new Magma V8 being readied for the GMR-001 hypercar could sit under the hood. That kind of engine would fit neatly with a luxury wagon built to contend with Europe’s most extreme offerings.

One question remains: will Genesis dare to put the G90 Wingback Magma into production? If it does, the premium market may be in for a high-profile reboot of the genre.
