Caoa Chery Himla previewed in São Paulo: mid-size pickup with turbo, PHEV and EREV options
Caoa Chery pulled off a quiet surprise at the São Paulo motor show, placing a new mid-size pickup called the Himla on its stand. There was no press-day presentation; the company said the truck was brought solely to gauge demand. Even so, the very appearance signals a clear ambition to enter a arena dominated by the Toyota Hilux, Ford Ranger, Chevrolet S10 and Mitsubishi L200, with fresh contenders like the BYD Shark and the forthcoming Ram Dakota.
In size, the Himla aligns closely with the class mainstays, while the look goes all-in on attitude. Up front sits a massive octagonal grille stamped with a bold CHERY script, flanked by three-tier lighting. Inside, the layout leans modern: most functions live in a large portrait infotainment screen, and the shifter is executed as a joystick-style selector. The stance reads deliberately rugged, and the cabin’s tech-first approach suggests the brand wants it to feel current from day one.
Technical details aren’t public yet, but Chery has confirmed three global powertrain paths: a 2.4-liter turbo gasoline, a plug-in hybrid PHEV, and an EREV electric version with a range extender. In a segment with scant electrified choices, those variants could become a real differentiator, especially for buyers who value efficiency without giving up usability.
If the project gets the green light, local production in Anápolis—where the Tiggo family is assembled—is under consideration. That would help with pricing and output. For now, the Himla remains a showpiece to gauge market interest, yet the odds of seeing this pickup on Brazilian roads look more than plausible.
