BYD makes Blade battery warranty retroactive: 8 years or 250,000 km

BYD has announced a major expansion of its warranty for Blade batteries: coverage now stands at 8 years or 250,000 km with at least 70% capacity retention. Crucially, the updated terms apply across the entire lineup, including vehicles already sold—both electric models and hybrids. A retroactive pledge like this usually calms concerns about long-term ownership and resale value.

The Blade packs have been central to making LFP chemistry mainstream in the auto industry. Lithium iron phosphate batteries are cheaper to build, avoid expensive metals, offer longer service life, and are known for their high safety margin. BYD states a lifespan of more than 3,000 cycles—equating to over 1.2 million kilometers—figures that set clear expectations for durability.

On the safety front, LFP cells have been validated by severe tests: a nail penetration test with temperatures staying below 60°C, overcharge up to 260%, heating above 300°C, immersion in salt water, and impact trials. Thanks to these traits, LFP sits at the core of BYD’s high-volume models and even powers the Yangwang U9X hypercar, which the company says recently set a world speed record. For buyers, that breadth of application reads as a confident signal of trust in the technology.

Beyond the battery headline, the brand keeps its existing coverage intact: 12 years of corrosion protection with no mileage limit, 8 years or 150,000 km for the powertrain, and a general warranty of 6 years or 150,000 km. Together, these terms sketch a clear, predictable ownership picture.
