Tesla hints at an autonomous camper van based on Robovan

Tesla appears to be seriously weighing a camper van for its future lineup, judging by comments from one of the company’s senior executives. The idea no longer sounds like idle chatter and looks more like a direction the brand is ready to explore.

Ashok Elluswamy, Tesla’s vice president of AI and Autopilot software, hinted at the project in a reply to Y Combinator CEO Garry Tan, who had encouraged startups to build RVs with fully autonomous driving. Elluswamy said they were working on it and attached a photo of an autonomous 20-seat Tesla motorhome.

A potential foundation for such a vehicle could be the Robovan driverless concept, which debuted at the “We, Robots” event. The vehicle has no steering wheel, and its low floor creates a generous, open cabin — exactly the kind of packaging that suits a long-haul motorhome.
