Tesla Model 3 and Model Y with LG NCM811 batteries: failures, costs, and warranty in Europe

Across Europe, complaints are mounting about Tesla Model 3 and Model Y fitted with LG NCM811 batteries made at LG Energy Solution’s Nanjing plant. According to the specialist center EV Clinic, these packs show widespread degradation and a high failure rate, while restoring individual modules is almost impossible.

Unlike Panasonic-made packs, which typically suffer isolated glitches even after 250–300 thousand kilometers, the LG units built in China often fail at the module level. Technicians report extremely high internal resistance: in a single module with 46 cells, up to 15 exceed 100 mΩ and the rest cross 50 mΩ. In practice, that means even partial repairs leave a critical risk of repeat failure.

Experts say these batteries do not meet expectations and stress that their real service life is far below Panasonic equivalents. While Panasonic packs are projected to last up to 400,000 km, LG NCM811 units barely reach 250,000 km. Цифры сами за себя: разрыв по ресурсу ощутимый.

Getting out of trouble isn’t cheap: a full diagnostic runs about €1,200, repair (if feasible) starts at €5,500, and swapping in a pack from another brand costs at least €8,000 before taxes. Для владельца это прямые расходы, которые моментально бьют по бюджету владения.

There is a silver lining: Tesla’s warranty on NCM batteries covers 8 years or 192,000 km with a minimum 70% capacity threshold. Yet more cars are edging toward the warranty limit, and the used EV market is already reacting—caution toward models with LG packs is growing. For buyers, that makes the battery specification something to check first, before looking at trim or options.
