GM adjusts EV production amid demand slowdown: Lyriq, Vistiq and Bolt plans shift

General Motors plans to temporarily scale back production of several electric models at its U.S. plants. According to Reuters, one of the two shifts at the Spring Hill facility in Tennessee will be paused starting in early 2026, affecting the Cadillac Lyriq and Vistiq. The plant will also shut down for an additional week in October and November.

Earlier, output of the GMC Hummer EV and Cadillac Escalade IQ at the Detroit-Hamtramck plant was reduced. In Kansas, the start of a second shift on the Fairfax line is being pushed back; that line is scheduled to begin building the new Chevrolet Bolt in late 2025. The Bolt is expected to become the company’s most affordable EV, with a market debut planned for 2026.

GM says the changes reflect an adjustment to an anticipated slowdown in the growth of EV demand. The company is maintaining its plan to invest $4 billion in U.S. manufacturing, covering both gasoline and electric models. Overall, the moves read as a pragmatic effort to align capacity with actual showroom traffic while keeping the flexibility to adapt.
