Top EVs for real long-distance travel: ADAC 20‑minute charge test
Real long-distance travel in an electric car is not just about how many kilowatt-hours fit in the battery; it is also about how quickly the car restores miles at a high-power charger. ADAC put that to the test under identical conditions: scoring based on 90% of the measured range and a single 20‑minute quick-charge stop. SPEEDME.RU analyzed the results and found that ten models cleared the 800‑kilometer mark, with the leader closing in on four digits.
First place went to the Porsche Taycan Performance Plus with a total of 981 km. It covered 513 km on 90% of its battery and added another 468 km during a brief charging pause, winning both on range and on the pace of recovery. Next came the Hyundai IONIQ 6 2WD at 931 km: despite a comparatively small battery, the sedan makes the most of its aerodynamics and a stable fast-charging profile, looking smarter than many heavier rivals. Third was the Audi A6 Avant e-tron performance with 921 km, striking a rare balance between motorway efficiency and a confident charging tempo.
From there, the top ten turns on fine details. The Audi Q6 e-tron performance (884 km) proves a crossover can be truly long-legged if it does not stumble on efficiency. The Lucid Air Grand Touring AWD (859 km) impresses with the longest battery-only stretch among the leaders, but it adds fewer kilometers in a 20‑minute top-up. The BMW iX xDrive50 (835 km) actually recorded the strongest highway segment, yet its rapid-charging speed is more measured.
The Hyundai IONIQ 9 (832 km) stays near the top thanks to consistent long-haul behavior, while the Mercedes EQS 450+ (825 km) and EQE SUV 350+ (806 km) lean on sleek aerodynamics and a predictable state-of-charge recovery. Finally, the XPeng G6 Long Range (820 km) is the only Chinese model in the top ten: modest on the first leg, it makes up ground effectively at a fast charger.
Taken together, the ranking underscores that on real road trips, a strong charging curve can outweigh sheer battery size. Low-drag sedans continue to shine, and the best crossovers are steadily closing the gap.
