Volkswagen ID.4 reliability: Consumer Reports score, recalls, and charging fixes
According to Consumer Reports’ latest reliability rankings, the Volkswagen ID.4 landed near the bottom among popular models, earning just 29 points out of 100.
The weak score largely reflects concerns over the EV’s battery and charging system. In 2025, the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced a substantial recall of roughly 14,000 ID.4s due to faults in the battery-charging equipment.
Issues began surfacing almost immediately after series production started in 2021. From 2021 through 2024, the company initiated several large recalls to address serious technical defects. The most common problems included improperly connected battery modules, wiring failures, and erratic behavior from onboard sensors.
Even so, the updated ID.4 has drawn positive feedback for its price-to-product appeal, substantial range, and a comfortable interior. That said, the tarnished reputation still weighs on the market value of used ID.4s. The refresh helps, but trust returns with time and miles—shoppers are watching closely to see whether the latest battery and charging tweaks stand the test of daily use.
