Euro NCAP awards China-market MG4 EV five stars ahead of possible EU debut
Euro NCAP has crash-tested the China-market MG4, a move that hints at a possible European debut. The car scored the maximum five stars, matching the rating of the MG4 already on sale in Europe.
The Chinese MG4 sits on a different platform and is offered in four versions with a range of up to 530 km on the CLTC cycle. The standout detail is its compatibility with semi–solid-state batteries. These packs are potentially lighter, more compact, and more energy-dense than conventional units, and they are better suited to fast charging and cold-weather use—an appealing combination in this segment.
The Euro NCAP test car was fitted with a conventional LFP battery, yet parent company SAIC says the new semi–solid-state unit has successfully passed safety tests. The design integrates the battery into the body, which increases stiffness and improves crash protection—an approach that underscores the focus on safety fundamentals.
The model has front-wheel drive and a lower curb weight—1,485 kg versus 1,635 kg for the European MG4. It is also longer and larger overall. MG indicates the car could slot below the updated MG4 and become one of the notable debuts at auto shows in 2026.
