Waymo recalls 3,067 autonomous taxis after school-bus violations flagged by NHTSA

Waymo has announced a recall of 3,067 autonomous taxis following an NHTSA investigation. The trigger was an incident in which a driverless car illegally went around a school bus during student drop-off. Details of the violation were previously reported by SpeedMe.ru.

According to authorities, since the start of the school year in Austin at least 20 similar violations have been recorded, with another six confirmed in Atlanta. Waymo said it had identified the cause and rolled out a software update on November 17, but agreed to a voluntary recall for extra checks and fine-tuning.

Despite criticism from local officials and concerns about safety, Waymo has not halted its services and continues to expand. The episode once again puts the spotlight on whether autonomous electric cars are truly ready for city streets and the unpredictability of real traffic; one misstep around a school bus can outweigh countless clean miles, making the upcoming scrutiny as important as the code itself.
