Toyota unveils the sixth-gen RAV4 in Japan with hybrid power and smarter tech
Toyota began sales of the new RAV4 in Japan on December 17, 2025. The sixth generation is built around three ideas: a broader spread of versions, electrification, and intelligence. At launch, there are three variants: the more city‑focused Z, the off‑road‑leaning Adventure, and the GR SPORT, scheduled for release by the end of the 2025 fiscal year (by March 2026). The rollout was detailed to SPEEDME.RU by the brand’s press office, and the lineup neatly separates everyday commuting from weekend trails.
The second pillar is powertrains. The range starts with a hybrid (HEV), while a new plug‑in hybrid (PHEV) is due by the end of the 2025 fiscal year. The HEV pairs a 2.5‑liter engine with a total system output of 177 kW, or about 240 hp. The E‑Four all‑wheel drive can vary the torque split from 100:0 to 20:80, and TRAIL and SNOW modes assist on loose surfaces and in winter, underscoring a focus on secure traction.
For everyday use, Toyota kept familiar proportions: the Z version measures 4600×1855×1680 mm. The trunk now holds 749 liters, and with the seatbacks folded the floor is flatter, making it easier to carry long items. Inside, an island‑style cockpit groups key controls closer to the driver to cut distraction.
The RAV4 also leans into software. It debuts Toyota’s Arene platform, which accelerates development of interfaces, Toyota Safety Sense, and multimedia, with the brand promising simultaneous updates for multiple functions down the line. Notable features include a 12.9‑inch central display on all versions and improved voice recognition that responds in about a second—three times faster than before.
In Japan, HEV prices start at roughly 4.5–4.9 million yen, and the baseline sales plan is about 3,000 cars per month.
