Volvo EX60 electric SUV set for 2026 debut with new safety system
The all-electric Volvo EX60, still awaiting its official debut, has already made Newsweek’s Most Anticipated New Vehicles 2026 list in the U.S. and Canada. For the brand, that’s a telling signal: interest is building before all the specs are out, and the mid-size premium SUV field in 2026 is shaping up to be especially fierce. Landing on that list this early hints that Volvo’s message is resonating beyond brand loyalists.
Volvo positions the EX60 as the first model on the company’s new technology base. The promise is bold: the longest driving range of any Volvo to date and a more cohesive, distinctly digital user experience centered on a connected cockpit. Within the lineup, the EX60 is being cast as a cornerstone—Volvo’s first all-electric SUV in the premium mid-size segment, a category where the brand has traditionally been strong—and another step toward full electrification. If delivered, that recipe could turn the EX60 into the brand’s anchor for the transition.
Arguably the most intriguing claim is the debut of a new safety system: a multi-adaptive seatbelt that adjusts in real time to both the situation and the individual, drawing on vehicle sensor data and a computing platform. The idea is to protect front-row occupants not to an average standard, but according to the specific dynamics of a given crash. Executed well, it reinforces Volvo’s safety reputation while adding a modern, data-driven edge.
The premiere is set for January 21, 2026, both online and in Stockholm. Production is planned at the Torslanda plant in Gothenburg, with series build slated to begin in the first half of 2026. The schedule hints at a bid to plant a flag early, before 2026 model lineups fully settle.
