GM recalls 2025–2026 Chevrolet Equinox EVs for low-speed pedestrian alert fix
General Motors has launched a recall for certain Chevrolet Equinox EVs from the 2025–2026 model years: the electric crossover may fall short of the minimum external sound requirement for hybrids and EVs in the United States and Canada. This standard matters at very low speeds, when a vehicle should be audible to people nearby—especially in driveways and parking lots.
The issue stems from software calibration. Due to incorrect settings, the vehicle might not play the external pedestrian-warning sound at the required relative loudness when traveling up to 10 km/h. This places the case under FMVSS 141 in the U.S. and the analogous CMVSS 141 in Canada, both of which specify how the volume should ramp in the 0–10 km/h range.
The risk is everyday and easy to miss: if an EV is too quiet while creeping along, a pedestrian may not notice it approaching. GM notes that the remedy is a calibration update in the electronic modules, with dealers instructed to apply a software fix; for some unsold vehicles, an over-the-air update may be possible. As issues go, a software-only correction is the least disruptive path.
