BMW iX3 demand outruns supply as 2026 production sells out
BMW is grappling with unprecedented demand for the new iX3: the order book is so full that 2026 production slots are virtually taken. The electric crossover became a hit before customers even had a chance to test-drive the first cars.
Key point: demand outpaces production
The second-generation iX3, unveiled at IAA Mobility 2025, shot to bestseller status thanks to a blend of a WLTP range of 805 km, charging power up to 400 kW, and pricing comparable to the gasoline X3. By the end of last year, orders had already surpassed those for the popular X3, and today BMW says capacity at the Győr plant is largely booked for all of 2026. It’s the kind of spec sheet that resonates with shoppers.
Technical and market details
For now, only the 50 xDrive version is on sale, yet demand is so intense that the wait stretches into 2027. Annual capacity is about 150,000 vehicles, and even that isn’t enough. BMW is preparing to expand the iX3 family with a more efficient rear-wheel-drive variant and an M performance version. In parallel, the iX1 is being updated and a coupe-style iX4 is coming. Long queues will test patience, but they often make desirable models even more sought-after.
Significance for the market and consequences
The iX3’s success points to rising demand for premium EVs with long range. For BMW, it reads as validation of the Neue Klasse strategy. For buyers, it is a clear signal: the hottest electric models are becoming scarce, and delivery windows are now measured in years.
The iX3 has emerged as one of BMW’s most successful recent models, creating a queue the company physically cannot process fast enough. This strengthens the brand’s position in the electric segment and sets the pace for the entire Neue Klasse lineup.
