Volkswagen accelerates electric car plans with new models and updates
Volkswagen is accelerating its electric push in Europe. Despite adjustments to EU environmental goals, the company reaffirms its commitment to full electrification and is preparing several key new models for 2026.
New Affordable Electric Cars
The main premieres will be the ID. Polo and ID. Cross—compact electric vehicles in the B and B-SUV segments. Both models will be produced in Spain and serve as entry points into the brand's electric lineup. The ID. Polo is promised with a price below €25,000 before subsidies, making it one of Volkswagen's most affordable electric cars. Both newcomers are built on the MEB+ platform and will feature front-wheel drive only.
Technology, Batteries, and Specifications
The ID. Polo will be offered with four power variants—ranging from 116 to 226 hp, including a GTI version. Both models come with two battery options: an LFP at 37 kWh and an NCM at 52 kWh. WLTP range will be up to 450 km for the ID. Polo and up to 420 km for the ID. Cross. Fast charging reaches 130 kW, allowing a charge from 10% to 80% in about 23 minutes.
Updates to the ID.3 and ID.4
Volkswagen is also completely overhauling its most popular electric cars. The ID.3 and ID.4 will receive updated designs, improved interior materials, and refined technology. In practice, the ID.4 crossover will change its name to ID. Tiguan, while the ID.3 is likely to retain its designation, as the ID. Golf name is reserved for the next generation on the SSP platform.
2026 will be a pivotal year for Volkswagen in developing its electric lineup. The launch of affordable models and the refresh of bestsellers should help the brand strengthen its position in Europe and compete more effectively with both Chinese brands and traditional automakers.
