Xpeng issues mass recall of 47,490 P7+ EVs for power-steering sensor faults

Chinese electric-vehicle maker Xpeng announced a mass recall of 47,490 P7+ sedans built from August 2024 through April 2025. The regulator reports potential faults in the wiring connections for the power-steering sensors. Because of that, the signal can intermittently drop out, which triggers a malfunction warning and can shut the system down entirely.

The recall begins on September 15 and covers more than 65% of all P7+ units sold. It is a significant step for Xpeng, as the P7+ is one of the brand’s cornerstone models, launched only last November as a rival to Tesla’s Model 3. Pulling back so many cars so soon after launch is a tough message for any flagship, yet it also shows a willingness to act before a minor fault becomes a major headline.

Even with the setback, demand has been rising: in the first eight months of 2025, Xpeng tripled deliveries to 271,615 vehicles. With a starting price of 186,800 yuan (about $26,200), the P7+ quickly became one of the lineup’s most sought-after models, suggesting the value proposition was striking a chord.

The company said owners will be able to have the defect corrected free of charge at its service centers. While the large-scale recall inevitably nudges the brand’s image, it also signals that Xpeng is prepared to move quickly on potential safety risks—an approach that, handled consistently, tends to steady customer trust rather than erode it.
