Volvo EX60 electric crossover: key features and market strategy

Volvo Cars has unveiled its new electric mid-size crossover, the EX60, at an event in Stockholm. This model will serve as the electric counterpart to the XC60 and is poised to play a crucial role in the brand's strategy amid slowing EV demand and revised plans for full electrification.

One of the biggest surprises was the price. In Germany, the Volvo EX60 will start at €62,990, making it comparable in cost to the hybrid version of the XC60. For context, the gasoline and hybrid XC60 currently starts at around €67,990. Volvo aims to achieve price and margin parity between the electric and hybrid versions of the model in all key markets, including the U.S.

Production and Launch Markets

The EX60 will be produced at Volvo's plant in Gothenburg. Sales will begin in Europe in summer 2026, followed by a U.S. market launch. Notably, Volvo has deliberately chosen not to launch the EX60 in China initially, following a strategy previously used by the Polestar brand.

Betting on Mass Appeal

Volvo CEO Håkan Samuelsson stated that the EX60 should become a major sales driver and attract so-called 'EV skeptics.' The company is banking on a combination of long range, competitive pricing, and fast charging that fits into a 'coffee break' format.

Context and Risks

Volvo also addressed potential tariff threats from the U.S., related to statements by Donald Trump. Company leadership considers the risk low and has no plans to relocate production. At the same time, the brand acknowledges that fully electric models currently account for only about 20% of sales, and the EX60 is expected to shift that balance.
