Volvo's major software update for older cars with Android Automotive
Volvo is launching one of the most extensive software updates in its history. In the second half of 2026, the Swedish automaker will remotely update the multimedia systems of all cars with Android Automotive produced after 2020. This will make older Volvo models feel "almost like new"—at least in terms of their interface and digital capabilities.
The key element of the update, as reported by Tarantas News, will be the shift to the new Volvo Car UX. This is the same user interface already found in the EX30, EX90, and the recently unveiled EX60 electric vehicles. It features redesigned menu logic, more modern graphics, and simplified navigation. Most visual elements and functions will be adapted to suit the screens and computing power of earlier models.
At the same time, Volvo will replace the previous Google Assistant with the more advanced, AI-powered Google Gemini system. The new voice assistant can engage in more "human-like" dialogue, better understand natural speech, help search the owner's manual, refine routes, translate text, and even assist with composing messages.
Volvo engineers emphasize that the main goal of the update is to reduce cognitive load on the driver. Thanks to Gemini, some tasks can be performed by voice, avoiding complex menus and screens. The company notes honestly that due to hardware limitations in older cars, the interface may differ in some details, but key functions will remain. The OTA package is already undergoing final validation.
Volvo's Chief Technology Officer, Anders Bell, called it one of the largest updates in the brand's history. The update will install automatically without a dealer visit, which is especially important for owners in remote regions.
In practice, Volvo is setting a new standard for vehicle support. Instead of minimal patches, the brand is offering a full digital upgrade to the level of new models. In an era where software is becoming as important as the engine, this approach could significantly boost residual value and owner loyalty.
