Nissan Leaf earns best new model and best EV under $35,000 awards

The third-generation Nissan Leaf has achieved significant success in the American market, earning two awards in the Kelley Blue Book Best Buy Awards 2026. The electric vehicle was named the Best New Model of the Year and the Best EV in the under-$35,000 price category.

Kelley Blue Book editors highlighted several key factors behind the model's win. These include its refreshed design, an EPA-estimated range of up to 303 miles per charge, support for the NACS fast-charging standard, and a starting price of $29,990. Notably, the new Leaf is cheaper than the original 2011 model when adjusted for inflation, underscoring Nissan's strategy of maintaining EV affordability.

A major advantage is the standard integration of the NACS port with plug-and-charge functionality. This gives owners direct access to over 27,500 Tesla Supercharger stations across North America without needing third-party apps or access cards.

The new Leaf's equipment includes features previously unavailable in this segment. Among them are a panoramic sunroof with tinting, two 14.3-inch displays with integrated Google services, and 64-color ambient interior lighting. This package highlights Nissan's aim to compete not just on price but also on digital technology.

Since its market launch, the model has already amassed an impressive list of awards. These include the Breakthrough EV of the Year title from InsideEVs, the Wards 10 Best Engines and Propulsion Systems award, and the title of best compact car in the world from the Women's Worldwide Car of the Year jury.

The Kelley Blue Book Best Buy Awards are in their twelfth consecutive year. When selecting winners, experts evaluate comfort, space, equipment, build quality, and driving experience, while also analyzing ownership costs and pricing strategy.

The Nissan Leaf reaffirms that a mass-market electric vehicle can be affordable, technologically advanced, and practical all at once. Amid rising EV prices, models like this form the foundation of the market.
