Rivian's Apple Watch update enhances older EV access and control
Rivian is expanding the functionality of its early electric pickups and SUVs with new app versions that allow Apple Watch to serve as a vehicle access and control device. However, a full digital key remains exclusive to the newer lineup.
What Changes for Owners of Older EVs
The Rivian App 3.9 update adds a companion app for Apple Watch. Owners of 2021–2024 vehicles will be able to use their watches to lock and unlock the car, start trips, manage climate and charging, and activate the alarm. For this to work, the Apple Watch must have 3G support and the app running on-screen—only then can the watch replace the key.
Why This Isn't a Full Digital Key
Unlike 2025+ models, where the digital key is stored in Wallet and works completely automatically, early models lack a "hands-free" mode. Generation 1 vehicles don't unlock automatically when approached or lock when you walk away—a screen tap is required. In practice, this means Gen 2 supports iPhone, Apple Watch, and Android smartphones like Google Pixel and Samsung, making the process contactless.
Who Benefits and How
This update essentially provides older EVs with an intermediate solution: comfort is improved, but physical keys are still unavoidable for those not using Apple Watch with LTE. For those who already wear such watches, the new function becomes a real replacement for a conventional key. Overall, the picture is straightforward: Rivian is enhancing the experience for early model owners by offering the most advanced form of digital access possible without altering vehicle architecture. While a full "wallet-key" remains exclusive to newer generations, even this partial solution significantly boosts convenience.
