Mercedes A-Class discontinued, new compact SUV model announced

Mercedes is ending production of the A-Class, which will be phased out of the market by the end of 2027. The brand has confirmed that a completely different vehicle will replace the five-door hatchback: a compact model with a crossover slant, priced above the old A-Class but below the new GLA. This move aligns with a major overhaul of the lineup, where older directions are being scaled back while the segment of compact premium models is being strengthened.

The discontinuation of the A-Class Sedan and the end of the B-Class story left a gap in the range. To address this, the company decided to increase the number of compact models from four to five. The family will retain the CLA, updated GLA, and GLB, with the classic hatchback's spot taken by a "different format" solution. Mercedes executives directly called the future model "distinct from everything before," confirming a departure from traditional proportions.

Previously, there was discussion about using the Smart #3 architecture, but a fully electric platform without hybrids did not fit the brand's strategy. Now, Mercedes is developing a compact SUV format aimed at meeting demand for more versatile vehicles while positioning its price between the CLA and GLA. Given current benchmarks, the new compact is unlikely to cost less than 45,000 euros.

Mercedes also notes that it does not intend to leave the C segment, where demand remains for advanced compact models with premium finishes, technological interiors, and enhanced transformations toward SUV aesthetics. The new successor to the A-Class will be a logical extension of this strategy.
