Toyota Highlander electric crossover details and specs for 2027
Toyota has announced it will fully transition its iconic Highlander crossover to electric power starting with the 2027 model year. Two main trims will be available: XLE and Limited. Both offer a choice between front-wheel drive and an AWD system designed for excellent handling in challenging conditions.
The XLE trim comes with two battery options: a smaller 77.0 kWh unit and a larger 95.8 kWh pack. The Limited trim is exclusively equipped with the larger 95.8 kWh battery. Toyota estimates a driving range of approximately 270 to 320 miles (435 to 515 km), depending on the selected battery and drivetrain configuration.
Power output varies from the base FWD-XLE at 221 horsepower to top-tier AWD versions delivering an impressive 338 horsepower. This translates to confident acceleration and strong dynamics across various driving scenarios.
Beyond the switch to electric power, the new Highlander features significant updates to its design and technical specifications. Its dimensions have grown noticeably compared to previous generations, enhancing cabin comfort and increasing passenger and cargo space. In practice, this means more room for rear-seat passengers and additional cargo area.
Toyota engineers have also equipped this flagship crossover with advanced infotainment systems for maximum comfort and convenience. The vehicle features a multimedia system with a large touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support, and an updated Toyota Safety Sense 4.0 package. This suite includes the latest driver-assistance features like adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, and lane-keeping assist.
Despite the larger body, the new Highlander's cargo volume is slightly more modest than its bigger sibling, the Grand Highlander, which is aimed at buyers seeking even more load space.
Another interesting feature is the inclusion of high-power outlets for powering external devices. This allows the vehicle to serve as an energy source away from home, enabling users to run electrical appliances or equipment directly from the onboard batteries.
Sales of the electric Toyota Highlander are scheduled to begin later this year, though official pricing has not yet been announced by the manufacturer.
