Volkswagen expands Multivan lineup with new Camper version

Volkswagen has expanded its Multivan lineup with a new Camper version, essentially a factory-built platform for creating custom campers. According to 32CARS.RU, the model is based on the long-wheelbase Multivan and comes in a maximally simplified configuration: only the two front seats remain in the cabin, both equipped with swivel mechanisms. These serve as the starting point for the future living area, while the entire rear section is left open for layout planning. The floor is unfinished, allowing tuners to choose their own materials and arrangement.

The key advantage of the Multivan Camper is its standard mechanical pop-up roof with factory finishing. Typically, installing such a unit requires complex fitting, but here the manufacturer has pre-configured it, reducing the time and cost of camper preparation. Access to the interior is provided by two sliding doors and a large rear door, just like a regular Multivan.

The powertrain options include a 2.0 TDI diesel with 148 hp, DSG, and front-wheel drive, as well as an eHybrid hybrid with 237 hp and a 4Motion system. Prices start at £43,900 before taxes, with the hybrid version priced at a minimum of £60,870.

In practice, this means the Multivan Camper remains significantly cheaper than ready-made California models, where the minimum price exceeds £64,000. The difference allows buyers to either save money or invest in a custom interior layout. However, owners must undergo a second certification stage, as the vehicle is delivered as an "incomplete chassis"—a mandatory step for all self-conversions.

For Volkswagen, this modification is a strategic attempt to reclaim the conversion market on its own platform. With the Transporter moving to a Ford base, the Multivan Camper effectively becomes the brand's main tool in the camper segment. The question now is whether professional workshops and enthusiasts will embrace this solution.
