Rivian updates EDV electric van with all-wheel drive and extended range
Rivian is continuing to strengthen its commercial vehicle division by updating its electric delivery van, the EDV—a model that has played a crucial role in the company's financial stability. While attention focuses on the upcoming R1 and new R2 vehicles, it's the EDV that provides a steady stream of orders, primarily from Amazon. Now, the manufacturer has confirmed a significant upgrade: the model will gain all-wheel drive and increased range thanks to a new battery pack.
The standard front-wheel-drive version has remained popular for urban routes but needed improvements for tougher conditions. In its updated form, the EDV adds about 30% more range, boosting it to approximately 550 km. This makes it notably more practical for long shifts and regional deliveries. The all-wheel drive enhances traction in snow, rain, and on rough roads—a factor European logistics companies have long highlighted as critical.
The model comes in EDV 500 and EDV 700 variants, offering up to 18.5 cubic meters of cargo space. The current version provides up to 420 km of range, but this update positions the van as one of the longest-range electric vehicles in its class. The EDV 500 is already in use by Amazon in Germany, demonstrating its adaptation to European infrastructure and narrow city streets.
Although Amazon is Rivian's main partner, the model is also available to other corporate clients looking to transition to electric transport. The improved EDV strengthens the brand's position in the commercial electric vehicle segment, remaining a quiet yet strategically important part of Rivian's portfolio. With extended range and all-wheel drive, it becomes even more competitive in the global delivery market.
