BMW's new off-roader aims to compete with Mercedes G-Class
BMW is venturing into territory long dominated by the Mercedes G-Class. While discussions have focused on X8 or X9—large SUVs for the U.S. market—the company has developed a different priority: creating a true off-roader more radical than the XM. Despite its power and luxury, the XM has limitations off-road, and BMW leadership aims to fill this gap.
According to sources, demand for such a model has existed for some time, and comments from BMW M boss Frank van Meel confirm the direction. He stated directly that he sees the M logo on an off-roader and reminded that motorsport isn't just about WEC and IMSA, but also events like Paris-Dakar. MINI's participation in Dakar and BMW Motorrad's experience have provided an internal foundation for the future project.
This isn't about a marketing version of an existing SUV, but a vehicle with a different purpose: increased geometric clearance, different suspension tuning, and a focus on extreme scenarios. BMW has repeatedly tested M-model prototypes in the sands of Namibia, and these sessions have effectively laid the groundwork for the vehicle under discussion.
Interestingly, similar ambitions have surfaced before: back in 2022, BMW showed an electric off-road prototype for the Middle East, though its fate remains unknown. However, the brand's current activity suggests the idea not only persists but has gained clear direction—the G-Class's position has remained out of reach for BMW for too long.
Van Meel emphasizes that a high-performance off-roader doesn't contradict M philosophy: Dakar vehicles combine power, dynamics, and control where there's no asphalt. Such a product could expand the division's boundaries and position the brand in a new segment where BMW has only had indirect presence until now.
Observers don't rule out that the new project could become a full-fledged G-Class competitor. A separate, fully M-oriented product with its own architecture is also possible. But one thing is clear: BMW is preparing a model set to become the most radical off-roader in its history.
