Ferrari patents motorized luggage mounting system for cars
Ferrari is developing a new generation of branded luggage, making it significantly more sophisticated. While customers can already order exclusive sets from designer Marc Newson—ranging from suitcases and bags to ski cases, heated boot bags, pet carriers, and golf bags—the company is taking things further by patenting a motorized luggage mounting system for inside its cars.
A patent discovered in the USPTO database describes a mechanism for front-engine models with a space behind the seats. It includes a motorized bar and special couplings that allow luggage to snap into place. The bar can move long, narrow bags through a folded seat, pulling them into the space between a partition and the seatback. The system then secures the luggage to prevent shifting during spirited driving—a common expectation for Ferrari.
An alternative setup involves loading through an open door: a bag is inserted with the seat folded down, then an electric motor returns the seatback to its position, automatically clamping the luggage in the designated area. Ferrari emphasizes that lifting heavy bags over the partition behind the seats is tiring and unacceptable for the brand's owners.
The system will almost certainly require a proprietary mounting interface, strengthening customer ties to official accessories. This mechanism makes sense for models like the Purosangue, 12Cilindri, and a potential successor to the Ferrari FF if the brand revisits the shooting brake format.
Ferrari has long evolved into a lifestyle brand, deriving significant profit from non-automotive goods such as clothing, eyewear, jewelry, and, of course, high-end branded luggage. The new patent simply expands upselling opportunities, meaning perfectly compatible luggage will soon become another element of Ferrari exclusivity.
