Kia Tasman plug-in hybrid under study, no showroom debut soon
Kia is weighing the launch of a plug-in hybrid version of its new Tasman ute, designed to take on the BYD Shark 6, Ford Ranger PHEV, and GWM Cannon Alpha. But despite growing competition in the electrified pickup space, the company is in no rush to bring such a model to showrooms. A conventional hybrid or even a fully electric version may arrive first.
Dong Hoon Kang, Vice President of Kia’s Mid-Large Sized Vehicle Chassis Engineering Design Centre, told Drive that a plug-in hybrid powertrain is on the table. Kia’s current PHEV lineup pairs a 1.6-liter petrol engine with batteries ranging from 11.1kWh to 13.8kWh. However, all are based on front-wheel-drive platforms, whereas the Tasman uses a rear-drive chassis built for heavy loads. That means significant upgrades would be needed in both motor and battery technology.
From my perspective, Kia’s cautious approach reflects the uncertainty of this emerging market. Buyers in 2025 are increasingly asking which car is better to buy when it comes to utility and efficiency. A Tasman PHEV could become a key contender, but for now Kia seems content to watch rivals establish the segment before committing.
