Porsche reshapes big SUV plan: ICE and plug-in hybrid first, EV later

Porsche has rethought its plan for a large, three-row SUV positioned above the Cayenne. Previously touted as a fully electric model, it will now launch with internal-combustion and plug-in hybrid variants. The shift stems from lower-than-expected demand for EVs; as CEO Oliver Blume noted, the adjustment reflects changing market conditions and customer requests. The move reads as a pragmatic recalibration rather than a U‑turn.

The company has also postponed the debut of certain electric models and shifted development of a new VW Group platform into the 2030s. At the same time, Porsche will continue producing updated generations of the Panamera and Cayenne with ICE powertrains, while keeping the Taycan, the Macan EV, and the upcoming electric 718 in its lineup.

Altogether, the brand is leaning into a blended strategy—pairing conventional and hybrid technologies with EVs for specific segments. For premium buyers weighing their options, that broadens the choice across ICE, hybrid, and electric power, making it easier to pick a drivetrain that truly suits their priorities.
