Tesla Model Y L: Extended three-row SUV launching in 2026

Tesla has officially confirmed that the extended Model Y L will launch in Australia and New Zealand in 2026. This marks the brand's first three-row SUV in the local market since Model X deliveries ceased six years ago.

The Model Y L features a body extended by 177 mm to 4,969 mm and a wheelbase stretched by 150 mm to 3,040 mm. It offers a 2+2+2 seating layout with separate second-row seats. All second-row seats come with heating, ventilation, and electric adjustment, while the third row includes heating.

According to homologation data, the model will be available exclusively with a dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup and a battery of around 82 kWh. Its claimed range is up to 681 km on the WLTP cycle, which is even higher than the standard Model Y Long Range AWD's 629 km thanks to improved aerodynamics.

The price is expected to exceed the current $68,900 for the Model Y Long Range AWD. However, if it stays below the $80,990 Volkswagen ID. Buzz LWB, Tesla would become the most affordable new electric vehicle with more than five seats in Australia.

The Model Y L is a strategically important product for Tesla in the region. The company is essentially replacing the niche and expensive Model X with a more mainstream three-row crossover based on its bestseller. With the right pricing, Tesla could capture demand from traditional family SUVs and electric minivans, entering the segment of affordable six-seat EVs where competition remains limited.
