Ford Mustang hybrid S650E prototype: V8 power under test
Back in 2017, Ford went public with plans to build a hybrid version of the legendary Mustang that would still carry a brawny V8. Production was initially slated for 2020, but the schedule slipped as the program ran into hurdles and delays.
Today there is a bona fide working prototype called S650E. Even so, the hybrid’s technical makeup remains under wraps: exact engine figures, the electrical side, and how the components work together have not been disclosed.
Despite the lack of specifics—and the uncertainty brought on by changing environmental standards and requirements—the company keeps testing its creation. That persistence suggests Ford intends to see the development through.
More recently, CEO Jim Farley signaled Ford’s interest in hybridization, noting the concept’s strong potential to raise performance and sharpen a model’s capabilities. In this light, it seems plausible that this Mustang variant will be the one to get the green light for further development and production.
