Opel Grandland Level 3 prototype communicates with pedestrians via lights and display

Stellantis has unveiled an unusual Opel Grandland prototype that points to how tomorrow’s cars could “talk” to people on the road. In this Level 3 vehicle, the familiar Opel badge on the grille gives way to a display capable of showing symbols and animations. Paired with a new lighting setup, it’s designed to make interactions with pedestrians clearer and more intuitive. The move subtly shifts the front end from pure branding to purposeful messaging.

Instead of conventional white light, engineers chose distinctive hues—cyan and magenta—that aren’t used elsewhere in automotive functions. When the SUV is driving itself, the indicators glow cyan; when it brakes for a pedestrian, they switch to magenta. Once the car comes to a complete stop, the lighting turns green and a walking-person icon appears on the display. The sequence reads naturally in real-world traffic and lowers the guesswork for those on foot.

The system relies on cameras and intention prediction algorithms that can recognize real scenarios such as a child darting into the street. In complicated moments, control shifts back to the driver—a sensible safeguard that keeps the human in the loop.
