Ford files patent for in-cabin animal detection and smart window control
Ford Motor Company has filed a patent for an in-cabin animal detection and window-control system. The application was submitted on June 1, 2023, and published on September 23, 2025, under number 12420728.
The concept relies on sensors and cameras to determine whether a pet is inside the vehicle, as well as its size and position. Using that data, the setup can automatically adjust the windows. The proposal also sketches out extras such as playing sounds, dispensing treats, or changing window positions to keep the animal more comfortable during a trip, including when the car goes through turns.
The company notes that patenting is a routine way to protect new ideas and doesn’t always translate into immediate production use. Even so, technology like this could make future Ford models more appealing to drivers who frequently travel with pets. On paper, smart window control tied to a pet’s size and location sounds genuinely useful, while add-ons like sound cues or a treat dispenser come across as pleasant touches rather than essentials.
