BMW updates M240i, M340i and M440i for 2025 with stronger B58

BMW has announced an update for its six-cylinder M Performance models in Europe. Starting in November 2025, the M240i, M340i, and M440i will adopt an upgraded 3.0-liter turbocharged B58B30M2 engine.

Engineers have squeezed out an extra 18 hp and 40 Nm, lifting output to 386 hp and 540 Nm. That trims the M340i sedan’s 0-100 km/h sprint to 4.3 seconds. The M240i also grows thriftier, with average fuel use dropping from 8.8 to 8.0 l/100 km on the WLTP cycle. It’s a modest tweak on paper, yet it targets exactly what matters day to day: snappier response and fewer stops at the pump.

Every European-spec model comes with xDrive all-wheel drive. In the United States, buyers can still opt for rear-wheel-drive versions, though the M340i Touring wagon is not offered there. Purists may pine for a tail-happy setup, but making xDrive standard in Europe feels like the pragmatic choice for year-round traction.

Despite the bump, this isn’t the most potent take on the B58. In the X3 M50 the engine is rated at 393 hp and 580 Nm, while the Toyota Supra Final Edition reaches 429 hp. Clearly, there’s still headroom within the family.

Rumors suggest the next-generation 3 Series will introduce a new M350 variant. It could deliver up to 417 hp and keep xDrive, while fans continue to hope for the return of a rear-drive option.

The refresh makes the M Performance lineup more compelling for Europe, pairing sports-car pace with improved fuel efficiency. It reads as a tidy, well-aimed update rather than a revolution, and that suits these cars’ brief.
