Chevrolet launches online car sales on Mercado Libre in Chile

General Motors is betting on digital sales with Chevrolet launching an official online store on the Mercado Libre platform in Chile. This marks the first time in the country that new cars can be selected and ordered through a marketplace, potentially changing the traditional purchasing model.

According to 32CARS.RU, the platform boasts over 14 million users and generates up to 170 million visits per month, making it a powerful channel for customer acquisition. The Chevrolet online store features 16 models with full descriptions, specifications, and trim options. Users can not only explore the vehicles but also contact a dealer directly.

In practice, this means shifting a key stage of the purchase process into the digital realm. Customers no longer need to start their journey with a dealership visit—they can simply open the marketplace, compare offers, and select the right option. Importantly, the dealer network remains intact: the online platform becomes the first link in the sales chain, while final steps like delivery and paperwork stay with traditional infrastructure.

This hybrid approach aims to speed up decision-making and improve convenience. Interestingly, GM is following a similar path to LADA, which is also actively testing marketplaces as a sales channel. If this experiment proves successful, the market could quickly shift toward an online format, and the role of dealers may begin to transform.

Automakers are increasingly moving into e-commerce, which is a logical step given that buyers already live much of their lives online. The question is no longer whether cars will be sold through marketplaces, but how quickly this will become the new standard.
