Rivian expands Performance Upgrade to All-Purpose mode on R1S and R1T
Rivian has reworked how the Performance Upgrade package behaves on the R1S SUV and R1T pickup after customer complaints. The $5,000 option previously lifted output from 533 to 665 hp and torque from 829 to 1,124 Nm, trimming the 0–100 km/h run to 3.4 seconds instead of 4.5. The catch was that the full benefit only arrived in Sport mode, where the suspension turned stiff and tiring in day-to-day driving.
Following owner feedback, Rivian’s software chief Wassim Bensaid said the extra performance is now available in All-Purpose mode, which gains quicker acceleration and revised response. That lets drivers tap into the added power without the discomfort associated with Sport mode’s firm suspension.
Moreover, Rivian is preparing further enhancements to the package, to be delivered via software updates by the end of 2025. Details remain undisclosed, while users are hoping to see RAD Tuner integration—a tool for fine-tuning settings in Sport and Rally modes that is currently limited to quad-motor models.
Despite the price tag, the Performance Upgrade continues to attract a share of buyers: it unlocks additional driving modes and makes the R1 even quicker. With the broadened capability in All-Purpose, the package looks far better suited to everyday use; addressing that earlier mismatch between power and chassis tuning should make the spend easier to justify.
