New Citroen 2CV concept to debut as affordable electric car
The market is gearing up for a major premiere: Citroen plans to unveil a concept for the new 2CV as early as October. The legendary model could return as a compact and affordable car, similar in size to the Renault 5. However, the main intrigue lies in the technical concept.
According to preliminary data, the new 2CV will be exclusively electric. This decision is linked to European initiatives supporting locally produced, low-cost electric vehicles. This is precisely where the key question arises.
The European market currently shows steady demand for hybrids and affordable petrol models, while fully electric solutions still lack versatility for the mass buyer. The success of the Renault 5 demonstrates that a compact electric car can find an audience, but many experts believe an even greater impact would be achieved with hybrid versions.
Citroen, in turn, risks limiting its audience by betting solely on electric power. For now, the role of the affordable car in the brand's lineup is filled by the Citroen C3, which offers several types of powertrains right away.
The revival of the 2CV is an excellent idea, but success will depend on flexibility: if Citroen does not offer hybrid versions, the model may not meet the expectations of the mass buyer.
