Mercedes revamps AMG GLC with new 53 models and six-cylinder engine
Mercedes has revamped its AMG strategy, launching new GLC 53 models and discontinuing the 63 versions with four-cylinder hybrids. The top-tier offerings now feature a classic six-cylinder engine, a significant shift that effectively acknowledges the shortcomings of the previous concept.
What's Changed in the AMG GLC Lineup
The new GLC 53 and GLC 53 Coupe are now the sole sporty variants of the model. Mercedes has temporarily shelved the former AMG 63 versions due to customer dissatisfaction with the hybrid four-cylinder setups. This move simplifies and clarifies the lineup.
Visually, the models retain the aggressive AMG styling but lose the signature square exhaust tips. Standard equipment includes 19-inch AMG wheels, DIGITAL LIGHT headlights, 5G connectivity, MBUX with augmented reality, and a full suite of driver assistance systems. The interior features sport seats with red stitching.
Technical Details and Performance
Under the hood is a 3.0-liter inline-six biturbo engine producing 449 horsepower, paired with a 48-volt mild hybrid system that adds a brief 23-horsepower boost. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h takes about 4.2 seconds.
The model comes with 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive, a nine-speed transmission, and rear-axle steering. Adaptive AMG RIDE CONTROL dampers are also available. This setup makes the GLC 53 a full-fledged sport version without the complexities of hybrid systems.
Pricing and Availability
The AMG GLC 53 starts at €102,396, while the Coupe version begins at €105,246. Orders are already open, with initial deliveries expected by summer 2026. Notably, these new models are priced lower than the previous AMG 63 variants.
The key change is a return to the classic AMG formula with a powerful gasoline engine. Buyers get what they wanted after criticizing the earlier versions.
