BMW unveils hydrogen flat storage for iX5 crossover

BMW has unveiled a key technology for its iX5 Hydrogen crossover: the new Hydrogen Flat Storage fuel system. This innovation boosts driving range and simplifies the integration of hydrogen powertrains into production models.

New Storage Architecture

The system features seven high-pressure composite tanks (700 bar) combined into a single module. Instead of separate reservoirs, it uses an interconnected structure with a central valve, enhancing packaging and efficiency.

Total hydrogen storage reaches about 7 kg, enabling a range of up to 750 km. Refueling takes less than five minutes, which remains a key advantage of hydrogen vehicles over conventional electric cars.

Integration into BMW Platform

The new system is designed for the X5 architecture and is compatible with the sixth-generation battery. This allows hydrogen versions to be built on the same assembly line as internal combustion, hybrid, and electric vehicles.

Additionally, the iX5 Hydrogen has gained Gen3 fuel cells and a new control system called Heart of Joy, which coordinates the powertrain and chassis.

Strategy and Timeline

BMW maintains a "technology-neutral" approach, developing multiple powertrain types simultaneously. Hydrogen is seen as a complement to electric vehicles, especially for long-distance travel and quick energy replenishment.

Full-scale production of the iX5 Hydrogen is scheduled for 2028. BMW is betting not on replacing electric cars but on expanding options. The new iX5 Hydrogen demonstrates that hydrogen can serve as a viable alternative where range and refueling speed are critical.
