Ford Expedition 2027 gets rear-wheel drive in multiple trims

Ford is expanding the 2027 Expedition SUV lineup by bringing back rear-wheel drive (4x2). This configuration was previously limited but will now be offered in several trims.

Sources indicate that 4x2 will be available for Platinum Elite, King Ranch versions, and models with the Stealth Appearance package. Meanwhile, four-wheel drive 4x4 will remain standard for the off-road-oriented Tremor variant. The base Active trim, as before, will be offered with both drive types.

Pricing for the new option has not been disclosed yet, but rear-drive versions are expected to be cheaper than their all-wheel-drive counterparts. For context, on the 2026 model, switching from 4x2 to 4x4 adds about $3,000 to the price.

This move signals a shift in Ford's strategy, which had previously emphasized all-wheel drive. A similar approach is being taken with the Lincoln Navigator, where rear-wheel drive has also made a comeback. Additionally, to mark the Expedition's 30th anniversary, the SUV will receive a special design package with unique styling elements.
