Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV tops Japan's plug-in hybrid sales again
Mitsubishi Motors has announced that its Outlander plug-in hybrid (PHEV) model topped Japan's domestic sales in the PHEV category for the 2025 fiscal year, which runs from April 2025 through March 2026, with 7,794 units sold. This marks the second consecutive year the crossover has led its segment in the Japanese market.
The Outlander PHEV has earned strong reviews in key markets including Japan, North America, Europe, and Australia, establishing itself as a frontrunner among electrified SUVs. In Canada, the model has ranked first in the PHEV category for three years running.
As Mitsubishi Motors' flagship, the Outlander PHEV serves both as an electric vehicle for daily commutes and a hybrid for longer journeys. The second-generation Outlander PHEV, fully redesigned in 2021, integrates the brand's latest electrification and all-wheel-drive technologies. Developed under the "I-Fu-Do-Do" concept—a Japanese phrase meaning "authentic and majestic"—the model delivers enhanced performance and a more refined appearance.
In October 2024, Mitsubishi Motors launched an updated Outlander PHEV featuring an improved battery pack that extends electric range and boosts driving dynamics. The refresh also brings upgraded interior and exterior styling, an expanded suite of advanced features, and a Yamaha-developed audio system now standard across all trim levels.
