Hyundai IONIQ 3 revealed ahead of official premiere
Hyundai IONIQ 3 has been revealed just hours before its official premiere. The new compact electric car enters one of the most competitive segments on the market and is set to take on models such as the Volkswagen ID.3, MG4 and BYD Dolphin.
The model is built on the E-GMP platform with a 400-volt architecture and uses a traditional hatchback body rather than the current SUV formula. At about 4.29 metres long and just 1.43 metres tall, the car leans into aerodynamics and a distinctive design with a kammback profile and split rear glass, a solution familiar from the Toyota Prius.
Inside, the cabin follows a modern minimalist theme, with a compact digital instrument display above the steering wheel and a central screen of up to 14.6 inches. At the same time, Hyundai has kept physical buttons, which helps set the model apart from many rivals. Practicality also looks strong, with boot space of up to 441 litres.
Technically, the IONIQ 3 will offer two battery options, rated at 42 and 61 kWh. Range reaches up to 496 km on the WLTP cycle, making it one of the more balanced offerings in its class. Fast charging is expected to take the battery from 10 to 80 percent in under 30 minutes.
The starting price is expected to come in below 30,000 euros, which would make the newcomer a serious contender among affordable electric cars.
The IONIQ 3 shows what a mainstream EV should be: practical, attainable and fitted with sensible range. If the pricing does prove competitive, choosing a car in this segment may become far less straightforward.
