Toyota has expanded GR Corolla assembly beyond Japan. According to Carscoops, citing Road & Track, the first British-built hot hatches are already reaching US dealers. Until now, every GR Corolla had been assembled at Toyota’s Motomachi plant in Japan.

The reason for the shift is soaring demand and limited capacity. To expand output, Toyota picked its Burnaston plant in Derbyshire, England, which already builds the regular Corolla for Europe. According to the source, the facility can produce around 10,000 GR Corollas a year. That should help shorten waiting lists for buyers in North America.

The GR Corolla is not assembled on the regular line but on a dedicated one. Toyota stresses that the performance version demands more precision than the mainstream Corolla. For the regular model, the tolerance on suspension alignment angles is about 0.75 degrees, while for the GR Corolla it is 0.25 degrees. According to Road & Track, many cars come off the line within 0.05 degrees.

The pace is different too. While a regular Corolla passes through each assembly station in roughly 142 seconds, the GR Corolla spends about 21 minutes at each of its 20 stations. Workers use dedicated jigs to set the suspension geometry, and wheel nuts are additionally checked by hand.

Toyota insists buyers should not notice any difference between Japanese and British GR Corollas. The main external clue is the VIN: Japanese cars start with J, English ones with S.
