Ford has unveiled a new special edition, the Mustang GTD Spirit of America, marking the 250th anniversary of the United States in 2026. The car also nods to Craig Breedlove — the legendary racer who set speed records in his jet-powered Spirit of America machines on the Bonneville Salt Flats.

The signature difference is the bodywork. The Mustang GTD Spirit of America is finished in Performance White with asymmetric Race Red and Lightning Blue stripes. The scheme is meant to evoke Mustang’s trademark three-stripe motif while highlighting the car’s carbon-fibre bodywork. Forgeline wheels are also part of the package.

Mechanically, there are no surprises. The special edition keeps the 5.2-litre supercharged V8 producing 815 hp and adds the Performance Package as standard. Top speed for the Mustang GTD is 325 km/h. Ford’s website also lists 815 hp, 900 N·m of torque and the same speed ceiling for the GTD.

Buying one of these is not just a matter of having the cash. The base GTD costs well over $300,000, and Ford uses an application system: prospective buyers have to be approved first. The application window for North American customers runs through May 18.
