Black on the Outside, Bulletproof Underneath: Miami Armored's Take on the Lexus LX 700
Miami Armored has turned the Lexus LX 700 into a discreet 360-degree ballistic capsule rated against 7.62 mm rifle rounds and two hand grenades, without touching the hybrid V6.
From the outside, this Lexus LX 700 looks like any other black, expensive SUV. That is exactly the point: it doesn’t advertise its armor, yet after Miami Armored’s work it can withstand 7.62 mm rifle rounds, including those fired from weapons of the AK-47 class.
The body has received full 360-degree ballistic protection. The package is also rated against two hand-grenade blasts. Inside, passengers are shielded by ballistic glass, while extra armor plates cover the fuel tank, engine bay and battery. That detail matters: there is no point in a strong passenger capsule if a few shots can disable the engine or fuel system.
The rear bulkhead, door hinges and panel seams have also been reinforced. An overlap system covers the gaps between armor sections so bullets cannot sneak through the weak points. The tires are run-flats, meaning the vehicle can keep moving even after the wheels are damaged.
Optional extras include a night-vision camera, a siren and PA system, LED strobe lights front and rear, reinforced bumpers, radiator protection, an air-filtration system and a roof escape hatch. That kind of kit pushes the LX 700 closer to a vehicle for security teams, diplomats or clients who care less about flashy luxury and more about a way out of a dangerous situation.
The drivetrain has been left alone. The Lexus LX 700 keeps its 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 paired with the hybrid system, putting out 457 hp and 790 Nm. Miami Armored says the extra weight of the armor does not seriously affect performance.
For an ordinary owner this LX is absurdly over-specified. But for someone who buys armor, top speed is not the point — the minutes after the first hit are. And here the Lexus stops being a status SUV and becomes a black capsule designed not to win a race, but simply to get the people inside home alive.
