Renault has launched the limited Grand Kangoo Couleur in Japan — just 100 cars in total, with 50 in each colour. The price is 4.69 million yen (around $30,000), and sales are handled through applications: if demand exceeds the run, buyers will be picked by lottery.

The headline feature is the paint. The vivid Jaune La Poste yellow nods to the French postal service, while the deep Vert Paris green evokes the kiosks and benches of Parisian parks. For the Kangoo this is almost home turf: the model has long been loved not just for its practicality, but for a personality that's hard to find in an ordinary minivan.

The Grand Kangoo is noticeably bigger than the standard car. It is 4910 mm long, an extra 420 mm. The wheelbase stretches to 3100 mm, 390 mm more than the short version. The sliding door opening reaches 830 mm — 180 mm wider than usual, which makes getting into the third row easier.

Inside there are three rows and 7 individual seats. The second and third rows slide by 130 mm, fold, tip up or come out entirely. Renault claims 1024 possible layouts. Boot space is 500 l with seven passengers, 1340 l without the third row and up to 3050 l with both back rows removed.

Under the bonnet sits a 1.3-litre turbocharged petrol engine paired with a 7-speed EDC dual-clutch gearbox. Equipment includes a 10-inch digital instrument cluster, the Easy Link infotainment system with an 8-inch screen, twin rear doors, the Extended Grip system and Michelin CrossClimate all-season tyres on 16-inch wheels.

On safety, the Grand Kangoo Couleur gets adaptive cruise control with Stop & Go, autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane keeping, a parking assistant, front, side and rear sensors, traffic-sign recognition and a driver fatigue monitor.

Cars like this don't sell on a discount. The Grand Kangoo Couleur wins you over differently: a rare colour, a vast cabin and a French oddity that, in a world of identical family crossovers, suddenly counts as an advantage.
