Seven seats, a socket and a starting price without the premium shock: MG rolls out the big MGS9 PHEV
MG's MGS9 PHEV brings seven seats, up to 100 km on electric power and a price tag well below most family-SUV rivals — but no DC fast-charging.
MG has launched the MGS9 PHEV in Europe — its first seven-seat SUV. The car is already open for orders, with a starting price of 44,990 euros, around $52,337 at the current exchange rate.
Dimensionally, this is close to a full-size family crossover: 4.98 m long, with three rows and seven seats inside. With every seat in place, the boot still swallows 332 litres; fold the rear rows and capacity grows to 2,093 litres. For a large family, this is exactly the case where hybrid hardware doesn’t eat into practicality. The same architecture lets MG quote a braked towing capacity of up to 2,000 kg — enough headroom for a caravan or a weekend trailer.
The powertrain pairs a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine rated at 142 hp with a 231 hp electric motor. Combined system output is 299 hp. The MGS9 PHEV hits 100 km/h in 9.6 seconds and tops out at 200 km/h. It’s no sports car, but for a seven-seat SUV the headline number lives elsewhere: a battery of around 25 kWh delivers up to 100 km without firing up the petrol engine.
There is a compromise. The MGS9 charges only on AC at up to 11 kW, with a full top-up taking around three hours. There’s no DC fast charging, so this is really a car for buyers who plug in at home or at the office. Once the battery is depleted, petrol consumption is quoted at 6.7 l/100 km. With a 65-litre tank, theoretical range climbs above 1,000 km.
The entry-level Comfort trim already includes 20-inch wheels, a panoramic glass roof, three-zone climate control, seven airbags, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus a 7-year or 150,000 km warranty. On safety, the car has already earned a five-star Euro NCAP rating, and the MG Pilot suite bundles up to 16 driver-assistance systems — from adaptive cruise control to autonomous emergency braking. The Premium version starts at 48,790 euros — about $56,757 — adding a powered tailgate, a Bose audio system, plus ventilation and massage for the front seats.
The MGS9 PHEV looks like a calculated hit on the family-SUV class: plenty of space, a long electric range and a price below many comparable rivals wearing a premium badge. The most debatable point is the lack of fast charging, but for a daily «home — school — work — shops» loop, a wall socket may well be enough.
