The "people's Rivian" arrives — and it costs nearly $58,000 to start
Rivian opened the R2 configurator with the priciest Performance trim first: 656 hp, 330-mile range, and a build that easily climbs toward $65,000 with options.
The Rivian R2 was pitched as a more affordable alternative to the larger R1T and R1S, but at launch the model doesn't exactly look cheap. The reason is simple: the first version to hit the configurator is the pricey Performance trim, with the more accessible variants arriving later.
For now, the R2 Performance starts at $57,990. The SUV gets all-wheel drive, 656 hp, a 0–60 mph time of 3.6 seconds and 330 miles of EPA-estimated range. Strong numbers for a compact electric SUV — but the price already sits closer to the top of the segment.
The more affordable R2 Premium at $53,990 is due in late 2026, while the entry-level Standard at $48,490 won't arrive until 2027. So the first impression of the «people's Rivian» is being shaped by its most expensive version.
Options pile up quickly. The Launch Green paint costs $2,000, the 20-inch wheels with all-terrain tires another $1,000. The lighter Coastal Cloud Signature interior will be added later for $1,000. The compact spare tire is priced at $755, and the wall charger at $800. With accessories, the total can climb to $64,510.
That said, Rivian hasn't buried the configurator under dozens of complicated packages. The Launch Package is temporarily free of charge and bundles Autonomy+, a special key fob, a tow package and access to the brand's signature green paint.
For buyers, the R2 remains an interesting but hardly budget electric crossover. It's cheaper than the bigger Rivians and well-equipped, but the real test will come when the Premium and Standard versions reach the market. For now, the «affordable Rivian» can easily turn into a vehicle costing almost $65,000.
